Balancing all the ideas
So..I want all the things. I want to go to ALL the places. I want to experience everything. Okay, so not everything, but a lot of things.
We’ve been talking a bit about summer plans, putting in for vacation at J’s work so it gets marked now. And all this requires planning-like the whole year. Do you know how hard that is??? I’ve always thought of myself as a planner, and for some things I am. But planning and then COMMITTING. That is tough work! There is a part of me that likes to maximize, which means, look and consider all the options. It is overwhelming and exhausting, let me tell you.
So, J and I sat down and narrowed down some ideas and picked some dates. We very well could have done ‘eeny, meeny, miny, moe!’
Personality has a part to play in how we (universal ‘we’) plan, or don’t plan, travel. I’ve always thought I was a J (judging), which is definitely the ‘planner’ aspect of personality, but over the last year or two, I think my J has slid the other direction, towards P (perceiving). P’s are NOT planners, are more ‘go with the flow’ type people. I think having kids has definitely made me more go with the flow. Also, I think my children have sucked my brain power to a fraction of its former self, and has made the act of planning stressful and rather unpleasant. I think now, I am more on the verge. I do enjoy some planning-planning a trip is my new go-to fun “past-time.” Planning a week’s worth of meals and kid activities…not as fun, more stressful. I guess part of that is work vs play. We planned for 2 regional summer trips, and other than that, some random days off he is supposed to have ‘X’ed’ out to try and ensure he gets them.
I really wanted to try and plan an international trip with him. But, he reined me in. And for good reason.
1.His shift could change this spring, and all our planning goes out the window.
- After checking the travel deal sites for a month or two, it has become apparent that the ‘deals’ only go out a few months at a time.
So, we may take all 5 of us on an international trip later this year (other than Canada), but it will be more of a “last minute” trip- as in, probably a week to 2 months out of actually scheduling.
Plus, the vacation time he requested off could easily be used to do something farther away, or more exotic….we’ll see.
As much as I want to travel the world and go see all the things!!, I also acknowledge we have a pretty awesome “backyard” in upstate NY. We have a giant lake (it’s Great, in fact), as well as world famous mountains; an international city half a day away, and an entire country 4 hours the other way. this is the short list! We are really very lucky. And because of other plans in the making for the future, I don’t envision staying in this area long term, so I do want to take advantage of the all the amazing resources that are here.
So, all this to say. I want to see all the things New York has to offer, as well as all the amazing things the world has to offer.
What about you? How do you plan your travels? What’s next on your docket? How’s your summer travel looking? How does your personality play into how you plan travel?
