It’s the halfway point of winter – hurray! But in upstate New York, it is still very much winter, which is my least favorite season. I seem to be solar powered, and the short cold days take their toll on my every year. Modern Mrs. Darcy does a “What’s Saving My Life Right Now” every year, and I love this post- a look at what helps her survive winter, and a reminder to have gratitude and appreciate the small things as well as the big things. So, here’s my list of winter self care and what’s saving my life right now.
Yes! I’m always dreaming of trips to take, my Pinterest boards show that! We are getting ready to go to the Caribbean: warm sand and sun are what I need! Something to look forward to makes the days go by a little bit faster, and it keeps me focused.
In January alone, I’ve read 8 books, which may in fact be a record. I’m not sure what’s different, but a mix of good fiction and non-fiction is keeping my brain occupied.
Now, I am a triathlete, though I’ve been hibernating for a while. I hurt my back in December, and Yoga with Adriene everyday has been a huge help in pain relief, and in getting me back towards caring for my body and feeling stronger. The kids love Cosmic Kids Yoga, which is great for them in winter.
Walks in the Snow or Cold
Even when it hurts my eyeballs, I go for walks a couple times a week, no matter what the weather. Ideally I would take them everyday, but let’s not get too over exuberant!
Podcasts have completely taken over my audio listening. Family Adventure Podcast, Nomad Together, Sorta Awesome, What Should I Read Next, 59 North, The Boat Galley, and Writers on Writing are some of my favorites right now.
Because of #5, I’m being more intentional about including music everyday, especially music we can dance to and get our bodies moving. Dance parties make everyone smile.
I bought these in the fall, and they are one of my favorite things. I wear them all day, every day, and cringe a little when I have to take them off to put on sneakers or boots to actually leave the property. They have soles on the bottom, so I wear them to go through the yard or down the driveway, no sweat!
Not gonna lie, I have watched more silly tv this month than normal. Something that makes me laugh is always a hit. And many times, it’s reruns of Friends or How I Met Your Mother. Laughing is important.
My kids love Lego, and in the winter, they get way more than their money’s worth of play! I’ve started looking up pictures of creations and challenging my 7 year old to recreate them…It’s been a fun challenge for him, and he always surprises me! Bonus, he listens to audiobooks while he works (right now he is re-working his way through the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan).
Ivy, the toddler, has gotten into play-dough recently, and it seems we have moved beyond the putting it in her mouth stage (hallelujah!). The kids got store-bought play-dough as a gift, which is great. But we all enjoy putting together a batch of homemade play-dough, it’s like baking…but without the calories! And the feel of kneading the dough is delightful, even for me. Having her (and a brother) at the table with play-dough while I cook has been an accidental genius save on my part.
While the toddler naps; while we sleep at night, if I just need to drown out the background so I can think and white, white noise to the rescue! The rumble of waves, mixed with some light rain has been so helpful to keeping people asleep when they should be! And rather than a noise machine, I’ve got an app. Hubby likes RainForest Sounds, I like Calm, and also zenmix.io (which is not an app, I stream it while at home on wi-fi).
